Food for thought: tea

This article featured in the Middle East publication The National compares the health benefits of Rooibos with those of green tea. Unlike green tea, Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free. In addition, Rooibos contains two relatively rare antioxidants which help the body to reduce stress and stabilise blood sugar levels. Read more.

Move over, Green Tea: Rooibos has health benefits too

Rooibos is a good alternative to regular teas because it contains no caffeine and is low in the potential irritant tannin (the cause of the bitter taste when you steep black or green tea for too long). It is also high in antioxidants which help to ward off inflammation associated with chronic pain conditions. Read more.

Does Rooibos contain Vitamin C? What about Vitamin E?

Rooibos does not contain any Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Even if the original plant contained it, ascorbic acid is unstable under oxidative conditions. It is extremely unlikely that any ascorbic acid would be present after the fermentation process. It is highly unlikely to find Vitamin E in Rooibos since Vitamin E is a fat-soluble compound and Rooibos does not contain any fats (or the fat content is negligible). The analysis of Rooibos confirmed that the samples contained no detectable Vitamin C or E.

Is Rooibos high or low in sodium? Is this good or bad from a nutritional point of view?

The analysis showed that the average value of sodium in Rooibos tea (extract) is 7,6 mg per 200 ml. The latest South African food legislation recommends a sodium intake of less than 2 400 mg per day. If the sodium content of a foodstuff is lower than 40 mg per 100 g a claim of “very low in sodium” is permissible. With only 7,6 mg sodium in a typical cup of Rooibos, it means that even up to six cups of Rooibos would contribute less than 2% of the recommended maximum daily sodium intake. So, Rooibos tea is very low in sodium.

Is it beneficial to steep and reheat Rooibos several times? Does the antioxidant activity increase when steeped for more than 10 minutes? Is there a difference when reheating in a microwave oven?

Longer extraction time will result in a stronger tea (containing more polyphenols) which will lead to an increase in antioxidant content. No negative effects of additional heating (such as keeping the brew hot on the stove for a long time) have been shown. No studies have been done yet on the effect of using microwaves as a heat source.
