Rooibos Ltd claims victory after settlement

In November last year, Rooibos Ltd claimed victory after reaching a settlement with competition authorities over charges that it forced customers to enter into exclusive supply agreements for the naturally grown tea. No penalty was awarded against Rooibos Ltd or the other respondents.

UTZ and Rainforest Alliance certification for Rooibos Ltd

Rooibos Ltd has just become a member of the Amsterdam-based global certification agency UTZ CERTIFIED, which sets sustainability standards for the growing and sourcing of coffee, cocoa, tea and Rooibos around the world. In addition, Rooibos Ltd received Rainforest Alliance certification which confirms that our products are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Read more


Rooibos Ltd receives Business of the Year Award from the Clanwilliam Chamber of Commerce

At the end of last year, Clanwilliam`s Chamber of Commerce presented its Business of the Year Award to Rooibos Ltd based on the contribution of the new Rooibos Ltd extraction factory. Says Ilse Lochner, chairperson of the Clanwilliam Chamber of Commerce: “This extraction factory is used for the manufacturing of Rooibos powder tea and it is the only one of its kind in South Africa. Establishing this unique and innovative new-technology facility in Clanwilliam is an investment in our infrastructure and in the future of us all."

Our Packaging Department received HACCP Award 2010

For Rooibos Ltd to maintain its Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) accreditation, all the relevant departments undergo a monthly internal audit and annual external audit. At the end of last year, the Packaging Department won the award for the best HACCP score over 12 months. Says Jaco van Zyl, manager of the Packaging Department: “This award confirms that consistently adhering to food safety and food quality standards has become a way of living for us. It is embedded in everything we do." According to Johann Basson, chairman of the HACCP team at Rooibos, “This does not mean we can become complacent. We need to assess and enhance our systems continuously to adhere to industry standards."


We attended the Biofach and Gulfood expos

Rooibos Ltd participates in trade shows all over the world to open up new markets, strengthen existing business relationships and increase awareness of Rooibos. We received excellent feedback from visitors to our stalls.

Biofach, Germany

We promoted red espresso and other Rooibos products at the Biofach expo – the biggest organic trade fair in the world – which took place in Nürnberg, from 16 to 19 February this year.


Gulfood, Dubai

We hosted a stand at the Gulfood expo – the world`s biggest annual food and hospitality event, serving the Middle East, Africa and South Asia – from 27 February to 2 March.


Leading SA parenting website features Rooibos recipes

The website www.childmag.co.za, which offers guidance for SA parents, features three recipes from Rooibos Ltd`s award-winning cookbook, A Touch of Rooibos. The recipes in this book contain Rooibos as a versatile ingredient that adds flavour and colour, and enhances the nutritional value of dishes and drinks. Read more

WP Women`s Golf tournament

Rooibos Ltd is sponsoring the Western Province`s Women`s Golf Tournament at the Hermanus Golf Club from 6 to 8 May this year. This is a 3-day foursomes tournament. Click here for details.


Exhibitions

Caffè Culture, London: This is the UK`s premier event in the cafe and coffee bar market. Over 5 000 decision-makers will meet and do business with suppliers, source new products and get updated on industry trends. Rooibos Ltd will be there for the first time to promote, among others, the Rooibos pod (Espresso Rosso). This event will run from 18 to 19 May. Read more


World Tea Expo, Las Vegas: Dedicated to creating a vibrant tea community, the World Tea Expo is the largest trade show and conference in the world for tea. From 24 to 26 June, industry professionals will gather to unveil new products, optimise merchandise and gain product knowledge. Rooibos Ltd will be there as well. Read more

Rooibos sponsors cycling team

On 27 November 2010, a team of cycling enthusiasts sponsored by Rooibos Ltd took part in the 18th Coronation Double Century Race over 202 km starting and finishing in Swellendam. Sporting Rooibos Ltd branded cycling gear, the members of the Rooibos Team were Jannie Cilliers, Danie Cloete, Clause Gey van Pittius, Johan Cronjé, Stephen Marais, Etienne Greeff, Robert Breet, Willie Kruger, Daniel Lubbe, Bernie Van den Heever, André Mouton en Taeke Van den Bosch. Most of them are from Clanwilliam and Vredendal.


A dream comes true for local athlete

Aubrey Swarts, a Sederberg Primary School learner and high jump athlete, took part in the SA Athletics Championships in Germiston thanks to financial support from Rooibos Ltd.

Chicken Curry
Chris Maré

1 chicken stock cube
200 ml hot, strong Rooibos
50 ml cooking oil
2 large onions, sliced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 piece fresh ginger, crushed
1 green pepper, seeded and chopped
10 ml curry powder
4 chicken breast fillets, cubed
1 tomato, skinned and chopped
1 tin (410 g) pineapple pieces, drained, juice reserved
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
cooked basmati or jasmine rice, to serve

1. Dissolve the chicken stock cube in the hot Rooibos.
2. Heat the oil in a saucepan and sauté the onions, garlic, ginger, green pepper and curry powder for 5 minutes.
3. Add the chicken and fry gently for a further 15 minutes.
4. Add the tomato, Rooibos stock, pineapple juice, salt and pepper and simmer for 20 minutes or until the chicken is tender. Stir occasionally.
5. Add the pineapple pieces and heat thoroughly.
6. Serve with fragrant basmati or jasmine rice.

Rooibos & Berry Panna Cotta with Caramelized Oranges

BERRY JELLY
2 gelatine leaves
80 g (100 ml) sugar
100 ml water
100 g frozen berries of choice

ROOIBOS PANNA COTTA
4 gelatine leaves
500 ml cream
150 g (190 ml) sugar
4 Rooibos tea bags
500 ml buttermilk

CARAMELIZED ORANGES
100 g (125 ml) sugar
3 oranges, peeled and pith removed

BERRY JELLY
1. Soak the gelatine leaves in cold water until softened. In a small saucepan, bring the sugar and water to the boil and add the frozen berries. Cook for 5 minutes.
2. Add the gelatine (without the water) to the hot mixture and mix well. Pour into the base of 6 to 8 ramekins and place in the refrigerator to set.

ROOIBOS PANNA COTTA
3. Soak the gelatine leaves in cold water until softened. Heat the cream, sugar and Rooibos tea bags in a saucepan until almost boiling. Remove from the heat, discard the tea bags and add the gelatine leaves (without the water). Stir to dissolve the gelatine. Leave to cool until the mixture starts to thicken slightly. Mix in the buttermilk. Once cooled, pour the mixture over the jelly in the ramekins and allow to set in the refrigerator.

CARAMELIZED ORANGES
4. Heat the sugar over a low heat until dissolved and a golden-brown colour (do not allow to burn). Segment the oranges, retaining the excess juice.
5. Once the sugar has caramelized, pour the excess orange juice into the pan and stir to deglaze the base. Add the orange segments and mix well.
6. Turn the panna cottas out of the moulds and place them in the centre of dessert plates. Spoon the caramelized oranges around the edges.

NOTE:
Powdered gelatine can also be used. Replace 2 gelatine sheets with 5 ml powdered gelatine.
Put 30 ml water in a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatine over the water. Leave the gelatine to swell.
First stir some of the warm liquid into the gelatine before it is added to the rest of the warm liquid .

Sonnigdal launches organic Rooibos in The Netherlands

A range of organic Rooibos teas have been introduced in Holland under the brand name Sonnigdal. The woman behind this initiative is Wendy Manintveld, who reinvests a percentage of the profits in an HIV/Aids project in South Africa. Read feature article on Manintveld in Dutch.

Reuben Riffel shares SA recipes with USA audiences

In January this year, celebrated chef Reuben Riffel – one of the contributors to A Touch of Rooibos – jetted off to New York City to be filmed for his appearances on both The Martha Stewart Show and The Today Show. “There is a definite interest in South Africa and in particular South African food", Riffel said, “and so I made simple dishes using South African ingredients that are available in the United States. Dishes like prawn dumplings with rooibos tea salt, curried pickled fish, peppadew salad, things like that." Read more about Reuben and his restaurants and see his recipes on the Today Food website.

Boston Tea brews new varieties

The Boston Tea Company, a supplier of tea and tea accessories to retail outlets and hotels in the USA, added Rooibos to its range of teas, punting its caffeine-free properties and flavour profile.

In Louisville in Kentucky, USA, Rooibee Red Tea has redesigned the labels on its bottled ice tea range. On the new labels, each flavour has its own colour represented by a graphic shape inspired by the petals of the Rooibos tea bush bud. Read more
