Feedback from the 30th Freshpak Fitness Festival

On 1 October this year, over 1 200 athletes flocked to Clanwilliam for the 30th annual Freshpak Fitness Festival supported by Rooibos Ltd. Various biathlon, duathlon and triathlon events, including special events for children, formed part of the programme. The athletes included professionals, local residents and health and fitness fanatics. The main beneficiary of the event is CANSA.

The winner of the triathlon was Nick Quenet from Stellenbosch, finishing in a time of 1:05:53. Celeste Renaud, a student from Rondebosch, came first in the women's event.

Well-known media personalities and sports celebrities taking part in the triathlon as special guests included Jade Hübner, a Top Billing presenter, and Theo Blignaut, SA pro triathlon athlete. Cornelia Liebenberg, a blind athlete, inspired other athletes and supporters by finishing the triathlon with the support of her guide, Alwin Deale.

Local residents also performed well at the festival. Bernie van der Heever finished third in the Veteran Biathlon. In the biathlon for teams local residents Stephen Koopman and Gertjie Ruiters (Team 918) came first, with Jacques Basson and Dawid Lourens (Team 920, Rooibos Ltd employees) finishing in second place.

The winners of the duathlon for teams were Martin Bergh (MD of Rooibos Ltd) and Lorenzo Pieters.

Herman Kotze, a local resident, walked from Cape Town to Clanwilliam to raise funds for CANSA, having lost various family members to cancer. He arrived in Clanwilliam on the day of the festival after having covered 261 km in ten days. People can still support his fund-raising initiative at www.givengain.com/ap/walkathon.
