It all starts with training
Rooibos Ltd’s Technical Manager, Johan Brand, is helping farmers from Suurrug and other farms around Clanwilliam to grow Rooibos seeds, take care of seedlings and establish a Rooibos plantation. This will be followed by sessions on the sustainable production of Rooibos. Later this year, Rooibos Ltd will provide farm workers and small-scale farmers with a Production Manual covering the entire value chain in the Rooibos industry.

Here, Fanie Hoorn (chairperson of Suurrug producers) “tips” a Rooibos plant, forcing the plant to grow sideways in order to form a bush. Anca Easton (Producer Liaison Officer at Rooibos Ltd) and Liezel van der Westhuizen (Certification Officer at Rooibos Ltd) ensure that the plants are tipped at the correct height.
