Feedback on Freshpak Fitness Festival

The 27th Freshpak Fitness Festival, which took place in and around Clanwilliam on Saturday, 5 October 2013, attracted a record number of entries this year and was sold out within the first two weeks.

This popular event, the Western Cape’s largest multisport festival, saw more than 1000 passionate fitness enthusiasts descending on Rooibos country to take part in the various swimming, cycling and running events. Apart from the fitness challenges, the event was a perfect opportunity for a weekend getaway in the heart of Rooibos country.

A young Capetonian from Fish Hoek, Frederick Wagenvoorde, won the Men’s Triathlon with a time of 01:03:02. Celeste Renaud from Claremont in Cape Town was the first woman to cross the finishing line with a time of 01:11:20.

Former eight times Ironman champion and triathlete, Raynard Tissink, proved that age is just a number when he was placed third overall with a time of 01.03.40 and also celebrated first place in the Veteran Men’s category.

Catherine van Staden, a paralysis sufferer, inspired all the other athletes, spectators and organisers by participating in the triathlon event with vigour and determination. After four months of rigorous training, early mornings and waiting patiently for her trike, Catherine says the day will remain in her heart for the rest of her life, not just because of the race, but because of the unforgettable experience of choosing not to allow her disability to disable her but to enable others in their dreams and goals. She wanted to show what someone can do with courage, hope and crazy determination. When she started this journey she had no idea what kind of impact it would have on people as she was setting out to dream big and achieve her goal, but it has become more than she would ever have planned or even thought of. Catherine’s final word of inspiration is that we have one life and she chooses to live it to impact the world, no matter what life has thrown at her.

The Cancer Association of South Africa, (CANSA) offered their services at the Freshpak Fitness Festival by inviting the public and all participants to their stand to make a donation for services such as a PSA finger prick test, which determines the health of the prostate, blood pressure testing, blood sugar finger-prick testing, weight monitoring, skin cancer screening as well as mole mapping with the FotoFinder Dermoscope Machine. CANSA, the event’s beneficiary, receives a percentage of the entry fees and is the ideal partner as research has shown that six cups of Rooibos a day will fight cancer.

The festival offered an array of fitness challenges to everyone, from kids and teens to adults. On the day, contestants participated in a variety of events including a 3 km or 1.5 km swim, a Duathlon (5 km run, 20 km cycle, 2.5 km run), Biathlon (5 km run, 20 km cycle) and Triathlon (800 m swim, 20 km cycle, 5 km run). These events were open to both individual participants as well as teams. The Fitness Challenge for teens consisted of a 2.5 km run; 450 m swim and 1 km run whereas the younger fitness fanatics participated in the FitKids (1km run, 200 m swim, 1 km run).
