Over 1 000 athletes compete in 29th annual Freshpak Fitness Festival in Clanwilliam

The recent Freshpak Fitness Festival, the Western Cape's largest multisport festival, wrapped up a successful 29th year on Saturday, 3 October 2015. This longstanding event attracted just over 1000 novice and professional athletes who competed in various swimming, cycling and running events in the heart of Rooibos country.

Events included swimming (1.5km or 3km), a duathlon (5km run/20km cycle/2.5km run), a biathlon (5km run/20km cycle) and a triathlon (800m swim/20km cycle/5km run) in which participants competed individually or as part of a team. Children competed in the FitKids challenge (1km run, 200m swim, 1km run) and the Run for Fun (1km).

This year, Dean Hopf won the title of triathlon champion (01:05:04), improving on his second-place finish from 2014, while Alexandra Quenet won the women's triathlon (01:13:42). Michael Gombart (01:06:32) secured the number one spot for the duathlon while André Liebetrau won the biathlon (00:59:48).

The event welcomed blind athlete David Jones who completed in the triathlon and Catherine van Staden, a paralympic athlete, who participated in the 3km swim and triathlon. They inspired the other athletes, spectators and organisers with their determination.

CANSA offered various health check services to the public at the Freshpak Fitness Festival. A percentage of the proceeds raised from entry fees was donated to CANSA. According to the event organisers, CANSA fits in with its vision of a healthy lifestyle supported by health-enhancing Rooibos.

Participating in his second Freshpak Fitness Festival biathlon, Ewan Strydom, Expresso Morning Show presenter, supported this fundraising initiative by competing on behalf of Freshpak. Leigh-Anne Williams, Strictly Come Dancing finalist and presenter for Expresso Morning Show and Good Hope FM, participated in her first biathlon.
