The three winning riel-dancing teams in the 2014 Annual ATKV Riel Dance Championships were the BK Stofskoppertjies (under 12 category), the Nuwe Graskoue Trappers (under 18 category, for the second year in a row) and the Suurrug Suur Trappers (senior category). They all come from the Cederberg area, including Wupperthal and Bushmans Kloof. Later this year, the Nuwe Graskoue Trappers will be travelling to the USA to compete in the World Championships as part of the South African Team of Performing Arts.
The riel-dancing teams enjoyed the full support of the community and sponsors such as Rooibos Ltd and Bushmans Kloof Lodge. Floris Smith, Assistant General Manager and Executive Chef at Bushmans Kloof Lodge, played a key role in the development of local riel-dancing talent. He also won the trophy for the Most Dynamic Leader in Riel Dancing in 2014.
Says Gerda de Wet, Communication Manager at Rooibos Ltd: "Who would have thought that this ancient form of dancing from South Africa will one day be performed on a world stage together with dancers from cultures around the globe? Riel dancing tells stories about hunting, harvesting and courtship. It forms part of our cultural history and Rooibos Ltd is proud to be associated with the preservation of this historic dance form."
