Rooibos Ltd sponsors Community Day with CANSA
On 12 September 2017, Rooibos Ltd sponsored a Community Day in Clanwilliam's Community Hall in association with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) to raise awareness of breast and other types of cancer. Various health screening services were offered to the public free of charge. This included mole screenings with CANSA's FotoFinder dermascope, cancer lifestyle risk analyses and cancer tests. Rooibos Ltd's sponsorship also included pap smears and PSA tests for prostate cancer. A total of 196 screening tests were done. Based on the outcome these tests, some people were referred for further tests.
Gerda de Wet, Communication Manager at Rooibos Ltd, said it was an easy decision for the company to once again sponsor this community event. "We work with Rooibos which is known for its cancer-fighting properties. Working with CANSA to help promote a healthy lifestyle therefore seemed a natural fit. It all starts with raising awareness and sharing knowledge, and collaborating with organisations such as CANSA."
A shavathon formed part of the event. To show their solidarity with cancer patients who lose their hair as a result of chemotherapy, shavathon participants could colour their hair with a washable dye.
Home carers from the Afrikaans Christian Women's Association (ACVV) and the Department of Health offered free blood pressure, HIV and eye tests, as well as weight and glucose screenings. The Sederkem Clinic in Clanwilliam hosted a health stand while CANSA's friendly Toktokkie man entertained children while educating them about cancer and how it can be avoided.
