Rooibos Ltd trains marshals for 2017 Freshpak Fitness Festival
On Saturday, 16 September this year, some 80 eager inhabitants from Clanwilliam attended a practical workshop on marshalling, crowd management, athlete directing and access control hosted by Rooibos Ltd. This provided them with skills to work at events such as the annual Freshpak Fitness Festival. Says Gerda de Wet, Communication Manager at Rooibos Ltd: "This workshop helps the local community with job opportunities while it enhances the experience of both athletes and visitors at the Western Cape's most popular multi-sport event."
According to Gerda, who is also the organiser of the Freshpak Fitness Festival, athlete surveys conducted over the past two years confirmed that the marshal workshops have had a direct impact on the improvement of services provided by the marshals. "The aim is to motivate the marshals and help them understand that they play a key role in the overall ability of the event to deliver a positive experience to everyone involved." She says the growing number of people enrolling for the workshop shows that the local community want to be part of the Freshpak Fitness Festival.
Previous workshop participants who worked as marshals at the 2016 Freshpak Fitness Festival were invited to apply for the position of supervisors this year. "Our ultimate objective is to see one or two of the marshals become interested in event management and upskill themselves in this field," adds De Wet. All the workshop participants received certificates of attendance.
This is the third year that Rooibos Ltd has hosted the marshal workshop. The workshop was presented free of charge at Rooibos Ltd's Visitor Centre in Clanwilliam.
